The Mess Around Mobile is a vintage 1963 Cushman Truckster converted into a mobile sound system. Expect everything vintage from the Truckster to the music selection. With a passion for delivering an authentic sound experience, we specialize in creating nostalgic vibes for events.
Who am I?
Ever seen the movie Bad News Bears? The 1976 baseball underdog story? Well I’m “Bad News Blairs,” my DJ name for 17+ years now. I first started getting into oldies music thanks to my parents. I was just a little ginger growing up in Billings, Montana listening to groups like The Shangri-Las and The Ronettes. Fun fact, The Ronettes became quite an obsession for me and are one of my all time favorite artists. The giant portrait of them tattooed on my thigh even says so. See that photo....that’s a picture of me with the one and only Ronnie Spector.
When I branched out and started discovering music on my own, I grew new obsessions and fell in love with ska and reggae. That sound would become the beginning of my record collection. I’ve now been collecting records for 26 years and have delved into many genres. Living in places like Seattle and then New York really expanded my taste. The bulk of my record collection is 1950’s and 60’s Soul, R&B and Rock n Roll.
I’ve always enjoyed playing records live. During my time in New York, I threw a short lived party with my best friend called Blow Up. It was a crazy mix of genres with me playing soul, punk and rock n roll records and my friend Elli-Vader playing dance, electro and hip hop. I’ve also DJ’d a variety of Soul and R&B nights thrown by friends in many cities.
Now having been in sunny Los Angeles for over a decade I realized I don't like staying up past 10 o' clock, shutting me out of most DJ opportunities. So I searched for another outlet to share my love of music. And that folks, is how “The Mess Around” was born. The idea to have it in a 1963 Cushman Truckster came from the mobile sound system movement from Kingston, Jamaica in the 1950s. My truck’s name you ask? Well it comes from the 1953 hit song “Mess Around” by Ray Charles.
